Contrary to popular belief, it was not the early apostles who introduced this practice to the church. It was the priest, John Chrysodom, who utilized his skills as an orator to introduce this practice to the church around 398 AD. Do think this was a necessary add-on? Are sermons really necessary for us to grow in Christ?

I honestly believe that they make it easier.
It's possible without them thru intimate scripture reading and study.
But sometimes having someone else vividly describe elements or dig apart something they learned in the scripture sure can help. _________________ Pastor & Sermon Outline Writer for Preachit.org since 2002 |

I'm not sure I agree that John introduced the sermon. Certain the Beatitudes are a form of sermon, as was Stephen's message, and Peter and Paul...and Peter, Paul and John's letters.
I guess it depends on what we consider sermons. _________________ Lady Jubilee
