Ignatius was faced with a great challenge. Heresies were rising up everywhere. So he appointed official leaders over the church to stomp out the problem. But it didn’t work, the heresies merely intensified. Why didn’t it work? Was Ignatius right or wrong to appoint official leaders over the church? Was he following scripture or is our modern day understanding of church leadership merely the fruits of his error? Was he exercising his God-given authority or was he trying to stop heresy with heresy? Even in the midst of such an onslaught of heresy, is it ever right to take authority over others?
